lyrics

Once upon a palace tall,
There lived the fairest of them all
Who every prince there was would come to court.

The king commanded her to wed,
But she'd say, "I want love instead.
The world is far too big and life's too short."

She made no plans and drove the kingdom wild;
"Whatever shall become of this beautiful child?"
They all sang,

"La, la, la, Princess, don't be lame.
Carry forth your royal flame.
Face your fate and pick a name.
Who gots the jewels may makes the rules,
But player, play the game."

Miles away, a pauper's son,
Who worked from dawn 'til day-be-done,
Was saving pennies, wishing on a star.

His mother said, "That's foolishness.
You'll never afford happiness!"
The boy replied, "I need a bigger jar."

A commoner collecting common cents...
The world just rolled its eyes, and it put up a fence.
The sign said:

"La, la, la, Pauper, don't be lame.
Daddy's broke, so you're the same.
Face your fate and paup in shame.
Pennies in cups just won't add ups,
So player, play the game."

Somebody save me,
Somebody dare!
Somebody let me out,
It's not fair!
Somebody change things,
Somebody cheat!

Then, somebody and somebody else met on the street.

Thus was born, within a glance,
A class-divided romance,
Strong enough to break the royal seal.

Waiting for Prince Charming ended,
Saving pennies was suspended,
God had smiled down like something real.

The kingdom was in uproar at the news
The Princess and the Pauper said, "We do what we choose!"
The both sang,

"La, la, la, kingdom don't be lame.
Neither you nor we're to blame.
Life don't care where you may aim.
Anticipate a twist of fate...
Yeah, player, play the game."
